  • Dana-Farber's Online Second Opinion Program

Dana-Farber's Online Second Opinion program lets adult patients from around the country – and around the world – get an expert second opinion from a Dana-Farber oncologist without traveling to Boston. Our Online Second Opinion program for adult patients is powered by Grand Rounds.

For parents of pediatric patients: request an online second opinion for your child through Dana-Farber/Boston Children's.

About Dana-Farber's Online Second Opinion Program

    neuro-oncology doctors

Our secure Online Second Opinion program is convenient and confidential. The entire process is conducted online – including collecting your records – helping you avoid disruptions to your regular schedule, while also saving on travel and lodging costs in Boston.

Use our Online Second Opinion program when:

    • You have received a new cancer or blood disorder diagnosis
    • Your condition or diagnosis has changed
    • Your care team recommends a new treatment plan or surgery for your diagnosis
    • Traveling to Boston for a second opinion would be a burden

A second opinion from Dana-Farber can provide you with peace of mind or additional options for your care.

    How it works

Typically, it takes 5 to 7 business days to collect your medical records, then 3 to 5 business days after your records have been collected to get your written online second opinion. Once you create an account, you will receive service from your own personal care coordinator and staff physician, who will guide you through the entire process, including:

    • Collecting your medical records from your local provider
    • Matching you with the most appropriate Dana-Farber provider
    • Interacting on your behalf with the Dana-Farber provider who reviews your case
    • Delivering your Dana-Farber online second opinion to you
    • Handling any questions you may have
    • Staying in touch to make sure you fully understand your treatment options

Please note: This is not an emergency service. Do not rely on electronic communications for help with medical emergencies. If you have a medical emergency, please call your local emergency service or go to your nearest hospital or urgent-care center.

    Cost

    Fees and coverage

    Bruce Johnson, MD

The cost of an online second opinion from Dana-Farber's program is $750. While this cost is usually not covered by insurance, for many patients it can be more cost effective compared to the expense of traveling to Boston and paying for lodging. It may also help you avoid disruptions to your daily schedule.

The cost of an online second opinion covers all of the services involved in the process – from assigning your care coordinator and staff physician, to collecting your medical records, to providing a written second opinion from a Dana-Farber oncologist, to helping you with follow-up.

Does insurance cover my online second opinion?

Currently, most health insurance plans do not cover online second opinions. However, you can use funds from your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for the service. Payment is due when you request your online second opinion, usually by credit card.

    What to expect

    Joyce Liu, MD, MPH

After you create your account, click the green button on the patient dashboard, or call 800-941-9309 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST. If you are outside the United States, call +1-775-440-2559.

You will be prompted to provide your email address, basic patient information, locations of existing medical records, and questions about your diagnosis and/or treatment plan.

Your Dana-Farber oncologist thoroughly reviews your medical records, diagnosis, and treatment plan and provides clear medical guidance in a written second opinion that will be provided to you and your local provider.

See this example of a Dana-Farber online second opinion.

A member of your care team will call you within 24 hours after you receive your second opinion to answer any questions you may have.

Your care coordinator will stay in touch with you to help you understand your options so you can chart your path forward with ease and confidence.

    After Your Second Opinion

    doctor and patient conversation

The Dana-Farber oncologist who reviews your case will provide a thorough written second opinion, including addressing any particular questions you may have. Our oncologist's second opinion may:

    • Agree with the diagnosis and treatment plan of your first opinion, confirming that you are going in the right direction.
    • Agree with the diagnosis in your first opinion, but may offer a different treatment plan, or additional treatment options.
    • Suggest a different diagnosis, and may recommend a different treatment plan.

You should go over your Dana-Farber online second opinion with your first opinion physician – and decide if/how to refine your diagnosis, treatment plan, or care plan.

    For treatment at Dana-Farber

It may be possible to schedule an appointment with the specialist who provided your online second opinion, and may require additional appointments with other Dana-Farber specialty providers.

Please note: The cost of your online second opinion cannot be applied to the bill for an in-person visit. Depending on your insurance plan, an in-person appointment may be covered by your health care coverage. Additional materials, including pathology slides, medical records, and imaging may need to be collected. The scheduling Dana-Farber staff will help you with this process.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start the process of getting an online second opinion?

Grand Rounds facilitates the online second opinion process. You can call Grand Rounds between 9:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. EST at 800-941-9309 if you are located in the United States, or +1-775-440-2559 if you are located outside the United States; a member of the Grand Rounds care team will guide you through the process of starting a second opinion through the phone. Alternatively, you can start a second opinion online through our website at any time. To begin, please create an account.

How much does an online second opinion cost?

The cost for most second opinions is $750. This fee includes medical record collection, a written second opinion from a Dana-Farber Cancer Institute medical oncologist, and guidance throughout the process from your personal care team at Grand Rounds (comprising a staff physician, care coordinator and record specialist). In rare cases, the complexity of the case will also require an opinion from other doctors including radiologists and pathologists. In these cases, an additional fee may be charged and you will be contacted to approve the payment.

    Will my insurance cover it?

Currently, most health plans do not cover online second opinions or consultations, so patients are responsible for the cost of the second opinion. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute cannot file a claim with your insurance carrier, nor can we provide a procedure (CPT) code for this service. If you have questions regarding this process, please call Grand Rounds at 800-941-9309 if you are located in the United States, or +1-775-440-2559 if you are located outside the United States.

    How long will it take?

Typically, it takes 5 to 7 business days to collect your medical records, then 3 to 5 business days after your records have been collected to get your written online second opinion. However, this timeline can vary, depending on how long it takes to get your medical records and assign a specialist who is best suited to review your case. We do our best to deliver your written second opinion as quickly as possible, but the process can in some cases take longer than expected.

Do I need to send my medical records?

The Grand Rounds care team will collect all of your medical records from the doctors you identify when creating an account with us. However, if you already have all of your medical records on hand, you can save time by sending them directly to the Grand Rounds care team. For international patients who have medical records in a language other than English, your documents must be translated into English and then submitted to Grand Rounds.

What if my medical records are in a language other than English?

Unfortunately, we are not able to process requests that are not in English. All documents pertaining to your online second opinion must be translated into English before being submitted to Grand Rounds.

Who chooses the physician who will provide my second opinion?

The Grand Rounds care coordinator will carefully review your second opinion request and will match you with the most appropriate oncologist to handle your case. You may request a particular oncologist, and we will try to accommodate that request, but we cannot guarantee that specialist will be available and assigned to your case.

What if I would rather visit Dana-Farber for an in-person appointment?

You can request an in-person second opinion by filling out this online form or calling 877-442-3324.

Is this service available to anyone?

For the most part, yes. However, we cannot offer online second opinions to a small number of patients living in certain excluded states and countries, due to regulatory constraints. If you live in one of these areas, you can still request an in-person second opinion by filling out this online form or calling 877-442-3324.

Is my medical and payment information secure?

Dana-Farber and Grand Rounds are strongly committed to protecting the privacy and security of all our patients. The Grand Rounds online portal meets all federal requirements for protecting personal health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). In addition, Grand Rounds does not store any credit card information in their system. All financial transactions are securely processed by Grand Rounds using industry-standard payment processing tools.

Can I schedule a follow-up appointment with the specialist who provided my online second opinion?

In most cases, yes. After you and your local doctor receive the second opinion, a physician from Grand Rounds will contact you to answer any questions and discuss next steps. We encourage you to discuss your second opinion with your local provider. If you would like to schedule an in-person appointment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, please alert your Grand Rounds physician at that time. Please note: the cost of your online second opinion cannot be applied to the bill for an in-person visit. Any in-person appointment or pathology review may be covered by your insurance, or you may be financially responsible. It may be possible to schedule an appointment with the specialist who provided your online second opinion, and may require additional appointments with other Dana-Farber specialty providers.

If I have an in-person appointment, can my medical records from the online second opinion be transferred to Dana-Farber scheduling staff?

Yes, but additional materials, including pathology slides, medical records, and imaging, may need to be collected. The scheduling staff will discuss this process with you. You may need to help collect these materials.

What is the affiliation between Grand Rounds and Dana-Farber?
