Alkaline Water

Ask the Nutritionist

Q: Is there any research regarding the alkaline water in helping with the treatment of cancer. If nothing conclusive, is it harmful?

Evan Hostetler, Las Vegas, Nevada

A: There is no scientific evidence that alkaline water helps treat or prevent any type of cancer. It is most likely not harmful but it may be expensive. Water alkalizing systems and bottled alkaline water can be pricey and may not be necessary to purchase.

Drinking plain filtered or tap water is the best option and staying hydrated is important for overall health. Try to aim for 8 glasses of plain water a day. If you don't like the taste of plain water, or want to add some variety, try adding fresh fruit, cucumber, or herbs to your water for a little flavor kick.
