Ask the Nutritionist
Q: Could you share with me the best diet to maintain while undergoing radiation therapy, especially if it will help offset any negative effects of radiation? And do you have any information on the benefits of seaweed?
Mary Ellen, Leverett, Massachusetts
A: If you don't experience any side effects related to food, such as lack of appetite or nausea, the best diet to maintain during treatment is one rich in fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.
However, if there are side effects experienced during radiation, it is necessary to ensure you are still getting the proper nutrition during treatment. See more information about how to get proper nutrition during treatment and healing. Dietary supplementation to ensure you are getting the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals may also be necessary. Find out more information about dietary supplements and breast cancer.
In terms of specific foods, like seaweed, while there has been no concrete evidence that it can combat cancer growth, that doesn’t mean it cannot be part of a balanced, healthful diet. Read more about seaweed in a previous post.
