Gastric Cancer and Antioxidants

Ask the Nutritionist

Q: My dad is about to start second line Paclitaxel/Ramucirumab for gastric cancer. He has been taking 500 milligrams of phytosome curcumin twice a day since starting Folfox. Is this the best type and amount to complement the new therapy?

May 2015

A: Generally, it’s best to consume antioxidants from food versus supplements during chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. Certainly during FOLFOX it would be contraindicated.

With paclitaxel/ramucirumab, there is not an overt contraindication due to these drugs’ mechanisms of action, but we would urge your father to check with his MD and RD locally and work to include turmeric with black pepper (for better absorption of curcumin but in safe levels) from foods during treatment.
