Ovarian Cancer and Food Interactions

Ask the Nutritionist

Q: Are there any foods or chemicals in foods that been shown to have an effect on ovarian cancer?

A: Ovarian cancer is a hormone-sensitive cancer. Due to this patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer should avoid highly concentrated soy foods (such as textured vegetable protein, supplements or soy protein isolates) and flaxseeds. These foods can have an estrogen-like effect in the body. Although the research is not conclusive, it is best to avoid these foods.

Some studies have shown benefits in ovarian cancer prevention from whole soy foods (soy milk, tofu, edamame) and green tea but these studies are not conclusive. The best overall anti cancer diet is high in fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. This balanced diet can help fight cancer and keep you feeling your best during treatment.
