Papaya Leaf Extract and Platelet Counts

Ask the Nutritionist

Q: I read that papaya leaf extract juice could help increase platelet counts. What are your thoughts?

AGG, Weston, Massachusetts

A: We could find no scientific evidence that papaya leaf extract, juice, tea, enzyme, or supplements will help increase platelet counts. While the product is probably not harmful, it has not been shown scientifically to increase platelet counts. It is also quite expensive.

The difference between the extract, enzyme, tea, etc., is simply a matter of processing the papaya leaf.

Here at Dana-Farber, we believe that an overall healthy lifestyle, with a sound, plant-based nutrition plan is the best way to help improve platelet counts and promote cancer survivorship.
