Prostate Cancer and Glucosamine Chondroitin

Ask the Nutritionist

Q: Is it safe to take glucosamine chondroitin with a history of prostate cancer?

A: Research on the effectiveness and safety of supplements is very limited. Supplements can be beneficial, but they are often over-used. Additionally, medications and supplements can interact with one another, so you should always consult your health care professional before adding a supplement to your diet.

Although glucosamine chondroitin is deemed “Likely Safe” when used orally and appropriately by the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, preliminary research suggests that men with a history of prostate cancer or at high risk of the disease should avoid taking supplements with chondroitin due to some concerning preliminary research.
