Q: My mother has recurring ovarian cancer. I have been given details on an organic supplement called salvestrols. What are your thoughts on these and are they safe?

A: Research on the effectiveness and safety of supplements is very limited. Salvestrol is a naturally occurring chemical in plants, particularly red or green plants, such as tangerines, strawberries, cranberries, and artichokes. Salvestrol supplements typically contain artichoke extract.
