Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. will recognize George Canellos, MD,
an internationally renowned hematology/oncology expert at Dana Farber
Cancer Institute, with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor will be
presented at the sixth annual Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. National
Physician of the Year Awards in New York March 28.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes Canellos, who is also the
William Rosenberg Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, for
his work in the treatment of advanced Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin
lymphoma.
"I am grateful for this honor, but I believe no person is an island
and all of what one achieves is a result of the environment in which
they work," said Canellos. "My work is a result of inspiration I have
received from my colleagues and junior staff."
Past recipients of the award have included Emil J. Freireich, MD,
University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston; Thomas E.
Starzl, MD, PhD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Maria
Delivoria-Papadopoulos, MD, Drexel University College of Medicine and
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Philadelphia; and Michael E.
DeBakey, MD, DeBakey Heart Center of Baylor and the Methodist Hospital,
Houston.
Canellos earned his medical degree from Columbia University. He
completed an internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital
and was a clinical associate at the National Cancer Institute and a
research fellow at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. From
1975 to 1995, he served as chief of Dana-Farber's Division of Medical
Oncology. He is currently a senior physician at Dana-Farber and Brigham
and Women's Hospital. He is the former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and is a past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
