Statement By David Nathan, M.D., concerning Leonard Zakim

From his team of caregivers to the other staff and patients he inspired, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute mourns the loss of Lenny Zakim today. He was an incredible person in so many ways.

Lenny's efforts to heal cultural divisions, to bring people together and to fight injustice are well-known. Here at Dana-Farber, Lenny's tireless advocacy for complementary therapies highlighted their value in helping patients gain a measure of control over their own disease and treatment. Due to his efforts, Dana-Farber has established the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies, which will now make these supportive approaches to care much more accessible to our patients.

In medicine as in public life, there are few higher aspirations than to make a difference in the lives of others. There is little doubt that both at Dana-Farber and in our communities, Lenny had a real and lasting impact, and we are all better for it. Lenny Zakim made a difference, and he will be missed.
