Surveyors praise Dana-Farber's patient-related clinics, labs

Dana-Farber earned Magnet status for top nursing care.

Dana-Farber earned"Magnet" status for top nursing care.

Outside reviewers confirmed Dana-Farber's excellence on several fronts this past spring. The Institute received high marks during a hospital-wide survey by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in April after a three-day site visit. The two reviewers, following a series of interviews with leadership, trips to patient care areas, and building tours, lauded the staff 's dedication and ability to work as a team.

"We're extremely impressed with the commitment you give to patients, the knowledge you have, and your willingness to look at each person treated from a physical and psychological standpoint," said appraiser Nicholas Alexander, RN.

A few months earlier, JCAHO surveyors had given top marks to the clinical labs operated by Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women's Hospital. These include the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center, the Cytogenetics Laboratories, and others that process tissue, blood, and other patient-related specimens.

More recently, Dana-Farber's nursing staff garnered kudos in the form of "Magnet" designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Considered the "gold standard" for excellence in nursing practice and scholarship, Magnet distinction came in June after a lengthy application process and a site visit. "This award acknowledges our multidisciplinary leadership and patient-centered care," says Dana-Farber's Diane Hanley, MS, RN, who cochaired the effort. "The past 18 months have been an enriching journey for us."
