Dana-Farber's Well-Being Program

  • Our Well-Being Program is a collection of benefits and programs offered to faculty and staff, which encompasses health, financial, community, and whole well-being. At Dana-Farber, we believe that wellness should be a fully integrated part of who we are as an organization.

    What is Well-Being?

    Well-being is a holistic view of one's life — it's about being one's best self, and doing things that help sustain that feeling. With that in mind, the Institute has partnered with several in-house and external resources to introduce a Well-Being Program that focuses on:

    • Health well-being
    • Whole well-being
    • Financial well-being
    • Community well-being

    Health Well-Being

    Health Well-Being includes traditional health and wellness programs that mainly fall under the categories of nutrition and fitness, including any general prevention-related efforts. Some of our ongoing and previously offered health initiatives include:

    • Vision Van: a mobile van that stops at Dana-Farber locations, allowing faculty and staff to have eye exam appointments with professional optometrists during work hours.
    • Get Fit for Less: a program for discounted health and fitness club memberships. Dana-Farber partners with fitness centers near each location to offer discounted membership rates. Coupled with the fitness reimbursement for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care members, exercise can be quite affordable. Employees can work on their fitness and financial well-being by taking advantage of these partnerships.

      Special membership options include Beth Israel Deaconess's Tanger Be Well Center, Beacon Hill Athletic Club, BodyScapes Fitness Club, Boston Sports Club, many YMCAs across Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and others.
    • Smoking cessation programs to support staff with quitting smoking.
    • Let's Walk: a program encouraging faculty and staff to make a conscious effort to walk during their workday — walking meetings, taking the stairs, walking between Dana-Farber locations, and more.
    • Nutrition offerings such as cooking classes and webinars.
    • EatRight Rewards: a program that makes healthy eating easier and more rewarding. By using EatRight Rewards, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care members can save money and learn to make healthier purchases while grocery shopping.

    Whole Well-Being

    Whole Well-Being is anything related to the mind and spirit. This component includes programs designed to help staff be – and sustain being – their best selves. Some ongoing and previously offered whole well-being initiatives include:

    • Headspace: an online meditation tool for teaching and practicing mindfulness. Employees learn techniques to monitor their moment-to-moment effectiveness, respond promptly and appropriately to difficulties as they arise, and remain open to new ideas and perspectives. Staff members are introduced to meditation practices that teach greater focus, creativity, and resilience in all aspects of life.
    • Employee Assistance Program: a free, confidential service that helps staff to manage their personal and professional lives by connecting them with consultants, to address personal problems and get help with everyday challenges.
    • Stress reduction tools and resources such as quiet rooms, chair yoga diagrams, and others.

    Financial Well-Being

    Anything related to financial planning and retirement savings falls under the category of financial well-being. Being financially well means you understand your "money life," so that you can work toward the financial goals that matter most to you. Available financial planning tools include:

    • Flexible spending accounts: available to help employees save on medical and dependent care expenses.
    • Celebrating 65: an educational program that provides information on Social Security, Medicare, and retirement health care options. Celebrating 65 can help employees take a proactive approach to retirement and plan for a healthy future.
    • Retirewise: a retirement education opportunity for faculty and staff of all ages. This four-part workshop covers a range of important topics that helps employees clarify their goals and identify the steps to achieve them.
    • Retirement planning experts from Fidelity and TIAA-CREF visit Dan-Farber's campus for one-on-one sessions with staff.
    • Harvard University Employees Credit Union: Dana-Farber faculty and staff enjoy the benefits of membership, including a complete range of financial products and services consistent with the changing needs of members.

    Community Well-Being

    A key component of well-being is being a part of one's community – getting involved, volunteering, giving back. The objective of Community Well-Being is to promote a culture of "giving back."

    Giving back includes an employee's personal service to both the Dana-Farber community and the wider community outside the Institute. Many Dana-Farber staff members participate in active events like the Jimmy Fund Walk — and enjoy giving back to the Institute.

    During the winter holidays, the Seasonal Giving Program helps our patients and families make the most of the season — from putting a holiday meal on the table to having the ability to buy gifts for those they love.
