Pancreatic cancer treatment and research at Dana-Farber

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in males and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in females in the U.S. Because the early stages of this disease often do not cause symptoms, it is typically diagnosed at an advanced stage. Therefore, the survival rate is poor compared to other types of cancer.

Compared to other racial and ethnic groups, African Americans are the most vulnerable to pancreatic cancer, followed by Whites.

Symptoms include pain in the upper abdomen and upper back; yellow skin and eyes, and dark urine from jaundice; loss of appetite; and nausea and vomiting.

The pancreas is located deep in the abdomen between the stomach and the spine.
