Safe Food Suggestions for HER2 Positive and ER & PR Negative Patients

  • Ask the Nutritionist

Q: What is safe to eat and avoid for HER2 positive and ER & PR negative patients?

    Mumbai, MH, May, 2017

A: For any breast cancer diagnosis, it is important that patients eat a balanced diet. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean or plant-based proteins. Specifically, for breast cancer, sometimes manufactured soy products, like protein powders or isolated soy protein/soy protein isolate found in nutrition bars or veggie burgers may be of concern, as we do not yet fully understand their role in producing an estrogen-like effect in the body.

It is important to clarify that whole soy foods, such as edamame, tofu, and miso can be consumed safely. It is also suggested that Vitamin D levels be tracked, and a supplement be given if the patient is deficient. Vitamin D rich foods include fish like tuna and salmon, mushrooms, and some fortified beverages. In addition, it is important for individuals to maintain a healthy weight and be physically active. If a patient is overweight, moderate weight loss can help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence.
