Metastatic Breast Cancer and Vitamin C IV’s

  • Ask the Nutritionist

Q: I have been working with a functional medicine doctor and they suggested doing vitamin C IVs. I currently have metastatic breast cancer which is estrogen receptive and HER2-negative. Is this safe to do with my type of breast cancer?

    Victor, NY, May, 2017

A: The short answer is that more information is needed to figure out if high-dose Vitamin C IV is effective for treatment. Vitamin C is an approved dietary supplement, but the US Food and Drug Administration still has not approved high-dose IV Vitamin C as a cancer treatment. While it is widely used by complementary and integrative cancer therapists, data is currently lacking with regard to how safe and effective this treatment is. Please follow up with your medical oncologist before pursuing IV vitamin C.
