Mushroom Supplements

  • Ask the Nutritionist

Q: What is the safety and efficacy of supplementing with turkey tail and/or mesima mushroom powder, post-laparotomy for an endometrioid ovarian tumor?

    JAP, Litchfield, Connecticut, June, 2016

A: Mushrooms are getting a lot of attention for their reported health benefits. Generally, mushrooms are a wholesome vegetable that contain many vitamins and minerals such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, vitamins C & D, phosphorus, and potassium. Some types of mushrooms also contain beta-glucans, which have been shown in preliminary research to have immune supportive effects.

Medical mushrooms are mostly grown commercially and are available dried or in liquid extract, powder, and capsule form. While there is limited research to show turkey tail and meisa mushroom powders have any negative reactions, some medicinal mushrooms have been shown to interfere with antihypertensive drugs.

Always let your doctors and care team know if you are interested in taking any new supplements, before you begin. It is advised to make sure you are purchasing supplements from a reputable source, or using a reliable brand to ensure safety and quality, as dietary supplements are not regulated in the United States.
