The 18th annual Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team was made up of runners from more than 30 states and a few foreign countries. In 2007, they ran the historic Hopkinton to Boston route with the goal to raise $4 million for cancer research. By raising a minimum of $3,000 each to receive an invitational entry to the race, DFMC runners supported the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber. Here are some of their stories.

Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge runners go the extra mile for cancer research
While running a grueling 26.2-mile marathon requires commitment and
dedication, for some, just completing the course is not enough. The runners
who finished the 111th Boston Marathon® on behalf of Dana-Farber transformed
their strides toward the finish line into strides toward cures for cancer.

Amy Jo Parker
Neither wind nor rain nor cold nor nor'easter could stop the 111th running of
the Boston Marathon® on Patriots' Day, or members of the Dana-Farber Marathon
Challenge team who participated in the event. Amy Jo Parker, for one, found
inspiration to brave the elements and the 26.2-mile course from 11-year-old

Jim Walsh
Jim Walsh has a pre-race ritual that has kept him focused on his goal for
10 consecutive years. Each April before tackling the 26.2-mile Boston
Marathon, he pulls out a sheet of paper and silently reads the names of
friends, family members, and co-workers who have been touched by cancer.

Survivors say 'thanks' with Marathon Challenge run
Their first visits to Dana-Farber came nearly 20 years apart,
but it is a shared commitment to the Institute and their
caregivers that propelled cancer survivors Kevin Roy and Uri
Berenguer 26.2 miles in the Boston Marathon on April 18, 2005.
