Why Join the Donor Registry?

Patient discussing Marrow donation

The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) at Dana-Farber is looking for heroes. Your generosity in joining the NMDP as a potential volunteer donor could help a patient with his or her battle with cancer.

Every year, more than 35,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with leukemia, anemia, lymphoma, and other life threatening blood diseases that require treatment with a marrow or peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplant.

Only 30 percent of patients in need of a transplant find a matching donor within his or her family. The remaining 70 percent search a worldwide database of unrelated donors, looking for their "miracle match" who is willing to donate their lifesaving cells.

When you join the NMDP we take only a small sample of saliva, but your commitment is much greater. Donors are asked to remain committed to donating until their 61st birthday. This commitment can mean the difference between life and death for the searching patient.
