Welcome to Palm Beach
POST, the Pediatric Oncology Support Team of the Child Life Institute
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute supports the Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST) of the Child Life Institute located at the St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. POST was established in 1997 with a gift from Dana-Farber.
The POST program helps children and their families deal with the impact of, diagnosis of, treatment of and recovery from cancer. Comprised of a team of multidisciplinary specialists, POST staff members add the extra dimension of care that helps a child and his or her immediate family deal with the disease of cancer in all its manifestations – from fear of what cancer can mean, to the impact of treatment, and the reaction of others – from coping strategies, community resources and to school re-entry, educational support to managing the financial impact.
The program has a staff of full-time personnel supported by a social worker, mental health counselor, child life specialist, a nurse and teacher. The team provides treatment to any child residing within a five-county area who has been diagnosed with cancer, and that is regardless of his or her treatment site.
The staff of the Child Life Institute Pediatric Oncology Support Team is committed to making the treatment and recovery of their young patients as comfortable as possible. Considering all of the lives a child touches, POST believes that supporting those individuals is integral to the child's recovery.
The Child Life Institute encompasses services that meet the needs of the children and families receiving treatment at the Children's Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center and Palms West Hospital. These services include POST, Sickle Cell Intervention Program (S.C.I.P.), Child Life Program/Training Institute known as B.E.A.R. (Bringing Education Arts and Resources) and Safe Kids Coalition of Palm Beach County.
