The Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (DF/BWCC) is one of the oldest and largest transplant centers in the world.

More than 5,000 stem cell/bone marrow transplants have been performed since the program began in 1972. Our physicians perform more than 370 transplants each year for the treatment of adult cancers.

Our scientists, physicians, and the entire patient care team are well known in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Drawing on their many years of experience, their knowledge and expertise allows them to solve diagnostic dilemmas, evaluate new transplant techniques and supportive therapies, identify targeted treatment options, and serve as leaders and educators.

Our program combines the clinical expertise, focus, and innovation of one of the nation's leading cancer centers, with the world-class care and services of one of the nation's leading hospitals.

This collaboration enables us to provide superior care and support to our patients and their families. Our services include:

  • Allogeneic transplants, with family member, unrelated donor, or umbilical cord blood;
  • Autologous transplants, using a patient's own stem cells to support a wide range of treatment applications;
  • Comprehensive services for related and unrelated donors;
  • A dedicated team of clinicians and coordinators that follows patients through the continuum of transplant services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings; and
  • Data repositories to support active quality assurance and patient outcomes monitoring.

A Patient's View

"Looking back, having a transplant made all the difference. It was my best option. The chemotherapy, full body irradiation, and transplant weren't so bad. I would do it again in a minute if faced with the same challenge."
