Why is this study being done?
PACE (Prevention Against Cancer through Exercise) is a six-month pilot exercise intervention study for women at increased breast cancer risk. Studies have found that regular exercise and having a healthy weight are associated with a decreased risk of getting breast cancer for both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women.
We are conducting this study to determine whether women who are at high breast cancer risk will take part in an exercise intervention study to help them become more physically active.
You MAY BE eligible to participate in PACE if:
- You are at least 25 years old
- You are at increased breast cancer risk
- Your most recent mammogram has been done on at least one breast within the past six months and shows no clinical abnormalities
You are NOT eligible for PACE if:
- You have been diagnosed with cancer, except non-melanoma skin cancer
- You are currently participating in a breast cancer chemoprevention trial
- You are currently taking — or have taken any of the following within the past 90 days — tamoxifen, raloxifene, or an aromatase inhibitor
- You have had a bilateral mastectomy (removal of both breasts)
- You currently exercise more than 90 minutes per week
- You are currently pregnant or planning pregnancy within 6 months
What is involved in PACE?
- Two in-clinic visits at Dana-Farber with an expert in women's health who will work with you to design a moderate-intensity exercise program consisting of at least 45 minutes of exercise on at least three days per week for 6 months
- Weekly telephone check-ins with the study staff
- Completion of daily exercise logs
- Wearing a pedometer everyday to track your daily steps
- Providing us with your most recent mammogram when you enroll AND agreeing to have your next mammogram within 30 days of completing PACE
