Project STRIDE: Standard In-Person and Telephone Based Genetic Counseling: A Randomized Study
Why is this study being done?
Project STRIDE is comparing face-to-face genetic counseling to telephone genetic counseling. In this study, experienced genetic counselors have created a way to provide genetic counseling over the telephone that mirrors in-person genetic counseling as closely as possible. Participants are randomly assigned to have face-to-face or telephone genetic counseling. Interviews are conducted to determine if telephone counseling is as effective as in person counseling.
Who can participate in this study?
You are 25 to 85 years of age and currently thinking about pursuing genetic counseling for your hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer risk and:
- You are a woman with breast or ovarian cancer AND have a greater than 10 percent BRCA1/2 carrier probability or
- You have never been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, but you do have a relative with a documented deleterious mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2.
What is involved in participating?
Participants are randomly assigned (a 50/50 chance) to have face-to-face or telephone genetic counseling. All study participants will have one or two appointments with a genetic counselor. Each woman will receive detailed information about her chance of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer and about options for reducing cancer risk. The pros and cons of genetic testing will be discussed and the genetic counselor will assist in arranging genetic testing for those who are interested.
