ProNAF: Proteomics of Nipple Aspirate Fluid
Why is this study being done?
The purpose of the study is to determine if breast cancer can be detected by analyzing proteins in breast nipple fluid. Ultimately, we would like to develop a test similar to the Pap Test in screening for early breast cancer to catch it earlier.
Who is eligible?
Women who are at least 18 years of age with and without breast cancer can participate in this study. However, you cannot participate if you:
- have a bleeding condition
- have a scarred or inverted nipple
- have an active infection in the breast or nipple
- are taking anticoagulants (blood thinning drugs)
- have bloody breast discharges
- have a history of prior breast cancer
- have pre-cancerous conditions (i.e. LCIS (Lobular carcinoma in situ), ADH (Atypical ductal hyperplasia), ALH (Atypical lobular hyperplasia))
What do I have to do?
First you will review and sign a consent document to participate. Next, you will be asked to massage your breasts for a short time, after which a small plastic cup will be placed over your nipple. Suction will be applied to the cup that generates pressure similar to a breast pump to collect milk and is usually painless. A small amount of fluid, usually about the size of a teardrop, is then collected for analysis. If you are having breast surgery, the procedure will take place in the OR. In addition to the procedure, you will be asked some questions related to your health history in the form of a questionnaire before you depart.
How long will everything take?
If you decide to participate, the collection of breast fluid takes approximately 15 minutes and the questionnaire should take less than 10 minutes to complete. A return visit is not required and your participation is complete after your visit.
Does the procedure hurt?
Most women report no discomfort and compare the aspiration procedure to breast feeding or using a breast pump. There is no needle involved with aspiration. We would be happy to demonstrate the procedure on the palm of your hand to give you an idea of what to expect and if any discomfort is experienced during the procedure, we will stop immediately.
Do you have to be breast-feeding to volunteer for this study?
No. Breast fluid can be obtained from the nipples of adult women even if they are not currently breastfeeding. In fact, if you are currently breastfeeding, you are ineligible for the study at this time.
Will this cost anything?
No. There is no cost to you to participate.
