Histiocytosis

Symptoms

It is important to remember that histiocytosis affects each child differently and that patients may not exhibit all symptoms of the illness at the same time. Also, there are some symptomatic differences between LCH and HLH: children with HLH are more likely to experience a rapid onset of severe symptoms including fever, weight loss, rash, fatigue and paleness.

LCH and HLH have varying symptoms. Some of the indicators of each type are listed below.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH)

  • bone pain/swelling
  • limp
  • chronically draining ears
  • dental problems
  • skin rash, especially involving the scalp, underarms and/or diaper area
  • growth delay
  • excessive thirst/urination
  • protrusion of the eyes
  • headache
  • fever
  • diarrhea or blood in the stool
  • jaundice
  • enlarged liver/spleen

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

  • fever
  • rash
  • enlarged liver/spleen
  • irritability
  • low blood counts
  • jaundice
