Radiation Oncology

Consultation and Treatment Planning

After simulation is completed, calculations are done by our physicists in conjunction with the physician to determine the specific dose of radiation to be given to the treatment area. Depending on the area of your treatment and the radiation equipment selected, blocks may be used to shield normal tissue.

In addition to the radiation oncologist, the radiation treatment team includes pediatric trained nurses and child-life specialists. These care givers are dedicated to pediatric radiation oncology patients and will participate in the entire treatment process to make the experience a pleasant one for both the patient and their family.

Treatments provided by our staff include:

  • Intensity Modulation Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • Total Body Irradiation
  • Stereotactic Irradiation - used in the treatment of brain tumors

In some cases, very young children may require sedation prior to receiving their radiation treatment. If required, general anesthesiologists from Children's will deliver medication to calm or put your child to sleep for the radiotherapy session.
