Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Integrated (or Complementary) Therapies?

Integrated Therapies are individual treatments that are used in addition to (or as a complement to) traditional cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation. Acupuncture, yoga, and Reiki are a few of the complementary therapies we offer at the Zakim Center. When patients integrate these therapies into their medical and surgical care, they are creating a more comprehensive treatment plan and helping their own bodies to regain health and vitality.

How does complementary care differ from traditional care?

Complementary care supports and encourages the body's natural mechanisms to recover from illness by addressing the needs of the mind, body, and spirit. Research has shown that stress reduction and pain management can lower blood pressure and heart rate, while improving circulation. This allows for greater delivery of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues, which in turn can promote more efficient recovery from trauma and illness.

How do I make arrangements to receive treatments?

To schedule an appointment or register for a program, call (617) 632-3322.

When can I receive treatments?

Our hours of service vary depending on the therapy. We will make every effort to schedule your appointment for a time when you are already coming to the hospital so that you don't have to make a separate trip.

What happens if I can't keep my appointment?

We are sensitive to the fact that there are often unforeseen medical distractions, necessary tests, and interruptions. We try to remain flexible. Our cancellation policy requires 24-hours notice prior to your scheduled appointment.

Should I tell my physician that I would like to receive complementary care?

It is important for your caregiver to know about all the medical and complementary treatments you are undergoing so that he or she can guard against unsafe interactions and follow the effectiveness of your total treatment program. Since complementary therapies are a relatively new approach to health care, there is a broad range of reactions to them in the medical community. However, many doctors are becoming increasingly open to exploring the use of these therapies with their patients.

What if I don't know what I want?

Our qualified staff is trained to help you answer that question. In consultation with your physician, our team at the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrated Therapies can help you create treatment plans that best suit your diagnosis and fulfill your individual needs.

Will my insurance cover it?

Despite the documented benefits of some of these therapies, most insurance plans will not pay for them. Some of our services can be billed to health insurance, some are offered at no charge, and some have a reduced fee. We will provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance company to seek reimbursement. Please discuss your individual needs with us and we will work to help you, regardless of your financial situation or health care coverage.
