Tony Meyer, PsyD, explains the long-term effects of brain tumor treatment to Justin Ternullo

After completing treatment for a brain tumor, children may encounter some of the following problems in the years to come: mild to severe memory loss, learning disabilities, difficulty with social adjustment, behavioral and emotional problems, seizures, slow growth, hormonal abnormalities, weight gain, fertility issues, as well as a risk of second cancers. At the Outcomes Clinic, survivors can address these problems with specialists, and meet other families facing similar challenges. Survivors become eligible for this clinic once they have been off treatment for two years.

The Outcomes Clinic allows survivors and their families to see a group of specialists in one place. The interdisciplinary team includes neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, radiation oncologists, and endocrinologists, as well as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, resource specialists, educators, genetic counselors, and others. Appointments are clustered so that survivors with similar diagnoses come on the same day, have a chance to meet one another, and join in a group discussion about the challenges they face.
