Dana-Farber plans events to celebrate Survivorship Week 2007, June 18-22

How to snack better, relieve stress, manage your finances, and even enjoy sex more (women only!) are among the featured topics during Survivorship Week 2007 at Dana-Farber.

To be held June 18-22 on the main campus, "Living Proof: Celebrating Survivorship" will include a series of free workshops for survivors of all ages and their families, as well as information tables in the Dana 1 and Jimmy Fund Clinic lobbies. All the activities are sponsored by the Perini Family Survivors' Center at Dana-Farber.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, a cancer survivor and a national leader in advocating for cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, will deliver a keynote speech on Thursday, June 21, in a program beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Jimmy Fund Auditorium. [Other survivors will share their insights as well.] Among his honors, Menino received a National Distinguished Advocacy Award from the American Cancer Society in 2006 for his longtime commitment to fighting cancer and to eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare and treatment outcomes in Boston and beyond. The Wellness Community of Greater Boston also saluted him in 2006 with a Gilda Radner Award.

In other activities, pediatric brain tumor survivors age 12 and older will gather over lunch on June 21 to trade stories and learn about recreational opportunities in New England.

Preregistration is required or recommended for many of the Survivorship Week workshops, covering such topics as "The Impact of Cancer on Your Checkbook," "Spirituality: The Sacred Journey," "Transition into Survivorship," and "Staying Healthy with Alternative Therapies." Sessions on ceramic tile painting, however, welcome drop-ins. Most workshops will be held in classrooms, but two — "Sun Safety Education" and "Paint Your Plate with Plant Foods" — will take place aboard the Blum Family Resource Center Van.

Named for its benefactors, the Perini Family Survivors' Center addresses the long-term physical and emotional needs of cancer survivors and their family members through care, research and teaching. Launched in 2003, the center serves as an umbrella organization for three clinics at Dana-Farber: the David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Clinic for childhood cancer survivors; the Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic, and the Stop & Shop Family Pediatric Neuro-Onclogy Outcomes Clinic for survivors of brain tumors.

For more information or to register for any of the survivorship workshops, please call (800) 883-6012.
