Boston Area Cancer Survivorship Research Meeting
October 20, 2006The Conference Center at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass.
The Perini Family Survivors' Center (PFSC) organized the first Boston Area Cancer Survivorship Research Meeting on October 20, 2006, at the Conference Center at Harvard Medical School. Chaired by Lisa Diller, MD, director of the Perini Family Survivors' Center, and Christopher J. Recklitis, PhD, MPH, director of research, the meeting provided an opportunity for local researchers to share their current work and to highlight future directions of cancer survivorship research. Underscoring the multidisciplinary nature of survivorship research, the 75 attendees represented more than a dozen disciplines and came from more than 17 institutions, including Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center affiliates, as well as Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston University Medical School, Brown University Medical School and Yale University School of Nursing.
Invited speakers included Steven Wolff, MD, chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee, who spoke on the current state of cancer survivorship research; Karen Emmons, PhD, director of the Center for Community-Based Research at Dana-Farber, who discussed health behavior intervention; and William Pirl, MD, director of the Cancer-Related Fatigue Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital, who commented on the prevalence and importance of fatigue in cancer survivors. Participants presented 30 posters describing their active research on medical late-effects, health behaviors, psychological adaptation, aftercare planning and quality-of-life as they affect cancer survivors. John Ayanian, MD, MPP, of Harvard Medical School, and Lisa Diller, MD, director of the Perini Family Survivors' Center, provided closing session commentary and discussed future directions for survivorship research.
The Boston Area Cancer Survivorship Research Meeting was supported in part by Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) and the Swim Across America Foundation. For copies of the final meeting agenda and abstract booklet, please see the attached documents below.
