Scientific Report 2009

A review of recent research

cover of the Scientific Report 2009

Dana-Farber has remained true to the vision of Dr. Sidney Farber to create a cancer center as equally dedicated to discoveries in cancer research as it is to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care. Our strategic investment in research is realized through creating a cadre of established scientific leaders and talented young investigators, acquiring technology at the leading edge of cancer research, encouraging collaboration among faculty, providing resources in support of promising work, and ensuring a spirit of innovation.

The 2009 Scientific Report highlights some of the most substantial research accomplishments of our faculty in the select areas of translational research genomics, computational biology, immunology, metabolic regulation and disease, DNA repairs, the field of population science, and surgical oncology. Many of these contributions span multiple fields of cancer research and provide insights both deep and broad. The report also includes overviews of the research taking place within each of our disease and discipline based departments and centers, and a complete listing of faculty and leadership.

The mission of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is to provide expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer, while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases.

To fulfill our mission, we foster a spirit of inquiry, creativity, and excellence, while promoting collaboration and innovation across traditional research boundaries. Hundreds of DFCI investigators push the frontiers of biomedical research every day. This Scientific Report summarizes the work of all faculty who are pursuing independent basic, translational, or clinical research. The report also features overviews by administrative leaders, directors of the new integrative research centers, and chairs of the Institute's six research departments, as well as a description of DFCI's Strategic Plan for Research - a blueprint for reducing the burden of cancer for all people.
