Recreational Resources Program

More than 1,200 Dana-Farber patients and their families have enjoyed free trips to baseball games, Broadway shows, museums, and other attractions this year through the Institute's Recreational Resources program.

Administered by Volunteer Services, the program is made possible by the generosity of Boston-area sports, cultural, and arts organizations, as well as individuals who donate tickets to upcoming events.

Among the most popular offerings are tickets to Boston Red Sox and Bruins games, Broadway Across America shows such as "Legally Blonde: The Musical," "Spamalot," "Frost/Nixon," and "A Chorus Line," concerts, first-run movies, and passes to the Museum of Fine Arts, Science Museum, and Children's Museum.

"These tickets are opportunities for patients to forget about treatment and bills, and all the stressors of normal living," says Program Manager Allison Bertsch. "They are opportunities for patients to say thank you to their family members, friends, and caregivers for their support.

"Most importantly, tickets to an event are a chance for patients to be the people they were before diagnosis — the person laughing at a funny line or cheering for a home run, just as every other person in the crowd is doing."

Except for Red Sox tickets, all tickets and passes are available to patients on a first-come-first-served basis.

Sox tickets, which are available to every home game with a few exceptions, are allocated through a once-a-month drawing. Two sets of four tickets are allocated for each game. All tickets, passes, and entry forms for the Red Sox ticket drawing are distributed at the Concierge desk in the Shapiro Center for Patients and Families, located on the first floor of the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care.

Patients and family members are invited to stop by the office periodically to inquire about other available tickets. Notices of attractions and upcoming events for which tickets and passes have been donated are routinely posted in display cases in patient-care areas.

"We're working to increase the number and variety of passes and tickets that we can offer," Bertsch says. "Community organizations and individuals are welcome to contact us if they'd like to participate in the program."
