New chief of breast surgical services named at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center

Tari King, MD, has been appointed Chief of Breast Surgery at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (DF/BWCC), effective August 1, 2015. King will hold appointments at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

In this role, Dr. King will oversee breast surgery in the DF/BWCC which includes breast surgical activities in the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber. As head of breast surgery, Dr. King will work collaboratively with medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast imaging, and pathology to continue to build DF/BWCC's integrated multidisciplinary clinical model for treating breast cancer. This model combines outstanding patient care with state of the art clinical and translational research.

"Dr. King brings extraordinary expertise in breast surgery and a track record of leadership in an academic medical center," said Eric Winer, MD, Director of Breast Oncology Program and Thompson Chair of Breast Cancer Research at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "Her research interests will expand our current efforts, and we are delighted that she will be joining us to lead such an important component of our breast cancer program."

Zinner, MD, chairman of the Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "Under her leadership, we believe that the breast surgery group will continue to flourish and grow as an essential component of the comprehensive services that we offer, with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to our patients with breast cancer."

Prior to joining DF/BWCC, King held a number of positions at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, most recently as Deputy Chief and Director of Research, Breast Service and was Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Medical College at Cornell University. She also led an active laboratory-based research program that has investigated the molecular genetics of breast cancer tumorgenesis and progression. Additionally, King has engaged in clinical research addressing current issues in the surgical management of breast cancer.

After receiving a bachelors of science degree in cellular and molecular biology from Tulane University, King received an MD from University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She completed a general surgery residency at Ochsner Medical Institutions and a clinical fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
