Biography

Paolo Ghia, MD, PhD

Paolo Ghia received his MD from the University of Torino, Italy, in 1990 and received his PhD in 1995 working at the Basel Institute for Immunology, Switzerland, studying B lymphocyte development.

He has done his post-doctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston studying the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, particularly of follicular lymphoma.

He is Professor of Medical Oncology at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, in Milano, Italy, and Director of the Strategic Research Program on CLL, a clinical centre at the affiliated IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, dedicated to clinical research including a dedicated unit for phase 1 studies.

He is currently visiting the Division of Hematologic Neoplasia at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA and he is Senior Lecturer at Harvard Medical School.

He has published over 380 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals on the pathogenesis and management of indolent B cell lymphomas, including Follicular lymphomas, Marginal Zone lymphomas, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

He is President of the European Research Initiative on CLL (ERIC) and Treasurer of the International Workshop on CLL (iwCLL). He is co-leading author of the EHA-ESMO guidelines for CLL treatment. He contributed to the ERIC recommendations on IGHV, TP53 and MRD analyses.

Research

We are studying the role of microenvironment in mature indolent B cell lymphoproliferative disorders, with particular emphasis on the role of antigenic stimulation

Our research is focussed on translational research in indolent lymphomas and in particular in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and marginal zone lymphomas (MZL) aiming at identifying molecular vulnerabilities that could be exploited either as prognostic/predictive markers and/or therapeutic targets.

We are interested in understanding the complex interplay between the genetic aberrations present in the malignant cells and the extrinsic signals originating from the surrounding microenvironment, including those through the B cell receptor (BcR).

We also interested in dissecting the natural history of these conditions starting from the pre-leukemic forms that may precede both CLL and MZL in order to stratify individuals in terms of actual risks of clinical progression.
