Cape Cod Hospital will be the newest member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaborative, it was announced today. Participation in the Collaborative reflects a demonstrated commitment to excellence by meeting a wide array of standards and best practices.

The announcement was made at a press conference today at Cape Cod Hospital.

As part of the membership process, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute clinicians and other specialists conducted an extensive review of Cape Cod Hospital’s outpatient adult medical oncology practices and procedures, including patient safety protocols, nursing and pharmacy practices, chemotherapy administration, and information systems. Cape Cod Hospital has met a wide range of standards and best practices in adult oncology.

Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaborative helps disseminate the latest and most effective, evidence-based best practices and standards to member hospitals and physician practices. Members undergo a rigorous review of their oncology operations and agree to implement key recommendations to meet Dana-Farber standards. Members also take advantage of ongoing consultations and access to support services, such as on-site specialty second opinion clinics, clinical trials, tumor board conferences and physician lectures.

Dana-Farber will collaborate with Cape Cod Hospital on physician recruitment activities and will jointly recruit physicians to help lead and work at Cape Cod Hospital. Dana-Farber and Cape Cod Hospital will continue to offer an on-site specialty second opinion clinic.

“We are very pleased to welcome Cape Cod Hospital as a new member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaborative and look forward to our work together. The Collaborative furthers our mission of helping to relieve the burden of cancer for as many people as possible.  We do this by conducting research to develop new and better therapies, providing expert and compassionate care for patients, and extending our expertise and working with other carefully selected care providers, such as Cape Cod Hospital,” said Laurie H. Glimcher, MD, President and CEO, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

“Providing the best quality care close to our patients’ homes, families and support systems is at the core of our mission at Cape Cod Healthcare,” said Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “This new affiliation with one of the premier cancer care and research institutions in the world means that people in our community now have access to the latest and best treatment options for a wide spectrum of cancers. The members of our dedicated team of oncologists, technicians, nurses, medical physicists and staff all look forward to a rewarding partnership with an exceptional Dana-Farber team.”
