60 Guest Street project would extend access to world-class cancer care

Today, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute announced its intent to file an application for Determination of Need (DON) with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) to develop additional outpatient oncology space at 60 Guest Street in Brighton, Massachusetts.

“In this important project, our goal is to enable more people with cancer to get the outstanding care they need in a convenient location,” said Benjamin L. Ebert, MD, PhD, president and CEO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “It is designed to help us meet the growing need for outpatient care with expanded capacity and a high-quality, well-coordinated experience for patients and families. The proposed new ambulatory facility at 60 Guest Street would strengthen our ability to serve patients for years to come.”

The 60 Guest Street location is designed to be an extension of the Longwood Medical Area campus, similar to Dana-Farber’s Chestnut Hill location. The proposed facility includes approximately 65 exam rooms and 83 infusion chairs, along with imaging and other essential services. If approved, the multidisciplinary care offered at 60 Guest Street will include consultations with medical oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists, and will bring together exam rooms, infusion, pharmacy, radiology, lab services and clinical trials in one location to support the smooth flow of patients.

The need for additional outpatient oncology capacity reflects the growing demand for cancer treatment and existing space constraints across Dana-Farber’s current sites, along with the need for additional capacity created by Dana-Farber’s collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). As part of the collaboration, Dana-Farber is assuming responsibility for BIDMC’s medical oncology services, while BIDMC will provide Dana-Farber patients with hospital-based and subspecialty services. The proposed 60 Guest Street facility would expand access for newly diagnosed and existing patients, supporting well-coordinated, specialized care for patients with cancer and their families.

The DON process, overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, is a framework for analysis to promote population health and increased public health value.
