Department of Cancer Immunology and Virology

The Department of Cancer Immunology and Virology (CIV) performs basic research in cancer immunology and virology, and develops novel therapeutic strategies based on mechanistic insights. We also emphasize the development and implementation of cutting-edge technologies that enhance our ability to study immune responses in animal models and patients.

The magnitude and durability of responses to immunotherapies in patients with diverse types of cancer are unprecedented in oncology. The field of cancer Immunology is one of the most exciting and important areas of investigation in modern cancer research.

The Edge of the Unknown: Envisioning the Future of Cancer Immunotherapy

Cancer immunology has yielded groundbreaking therapies, yet there is still so much to explore. With continued research, we will uncover new insights into how cancer interacts with the immune system; discover novel targets for treatment; and develop strategies to overcome resistance. As we venture into the unknown of cancer immunology, the potential for innovative treatments is immense, promising a future where cancer is more manageable, and in some cases, curable.

Our mission is to serve as an intellectual hub for cancer immunology efforts across the Institute and the Harvard Medical School community. We foster close collaborations with our clinical colleagues, aiming to ensure a seamless transition from basic discovery to clinical translation. We serve as a source of expertise in key areas of cancer immunology and engage in active collaborations with many investigators outside of the department.
