U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals guide has ranked Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center the top cancer center in New England for the 13th straight year and fifth overall in the country. The rankings are available online at and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook on Aug. 27.

Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center is a collaboration of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is dedicated to providing comprehensive, specialized care for adults with cancer and conducting research directed at developing new ways to prevent, screen for and treat cancer.

“The treatment of a disease as complex as cancer requires a team approach, as well as research that enables patients to take advantage of the latest scientific breakthroughs,” said Edward J. Benz, Jr., MD, president of Dana-Farber. “That combination of scientific inquiry and compassionate care is the strength of the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center. It’s gratifying to again be recognized for the quality of care we provide, and for our commitment to developing the treatments that will improve the lives of future patients.”

“This ranking is a testament to the talent and dedication of each member of our Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center community and their compassionate and relentless drive to do everything possible for our patients and their families – to personalize care, to conquer cancer through innovation and discovery, and to teach all of this to the next generation,” said Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, president of Brigham and Women’s Health Care.

This past May, U.S. News & World Report ranked Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center second among all pediatric cancer hospitals in the country and first in New England.

U.S. News & World Report publishes the hospital guide each year as a reference for patients who are reviewing their medical care options.  RTI International, Research Triangle Park, NC, generated the 2013-14 rankings based on data provided on 4,806 hospitals in the U.S. The guide ranks medical facilities in cancer and 15 other specialties. The overall score is based on professional reputation, mortality rates, patient safety, and a grouping of care-related factors such as nursing and patient services.
